A new opportunity is opening up for women ready to step into leadership across Africa.
The United Nations Development Programme, alongside the African Union Commission, African Women Leaders Network, and African School of Governance, has launched the African Academy for Women in Political Leadership 2026.
This is not just another training. It is a continental program built to shape the next generation of women who will lead and govern Africa.
Application deadline is May 15, 2026.
What This Program Is About
This academy is designed to equip women with real political leadership skills, not theory.
Selected participants will go through a four-week blended program that combines virtual learning with a physical residential experience in Kigali, Rwanda.
The focus is on building leaders who understand governance, influence policy, and can operate effectively in political systems.
What You’ll Gain
Participants will be trained in key areas like political leadership and governance, strategic communication, coalition building, legislative processes, campaign strategy and financing, as well as ethical and inclusive leadership.
Beyond training, there is mentorship from senior African leaders and hands-on learning that prepares participants for real political environments.
Full Funding
Everything is covered.
Tuition, travel, and accommodation for the Kigali residency are fully funded for selected participants.
Who This Is For
This opportunity is open to women across Africa who are already in politics or seriously working towards it.
This includes women preparing for elections within the next 12 to 36 months, current political office holders like ministers, lawmakers, governors, and party leaders, as well as young women aged 21 to 35 with strong leadership potential.
Women with disabilities and those from fragile or transitioning political environments are also strongly encouraged to apply.
Basic Requirements
Applicants must be female citizens of an African Union member state, at least 21 years old, actively involved in politics or showing clear political ambition, and must have endorsement from a recognised political or government body.
There must also be a commitment to fully participate in the program and remain engaged after completion.
How Selection Works
Only 30 women will be selected.
Selection is competitive and based on merit, with a strong focus on regional balance, diversity, and impact.
The final group will reflect representation across Africa’s regions, include a strong percentage of young leaders, and maintain diversity across language and political backgrounds.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted through nominations.
Government institutions, political parties, and civil society organisations can nominate candidates. Self-nominations are also allowed, but must be backed by an official endorsement.
Each application must include an endorsement letter, a CV, and a personal statement.

It is a direct pipeline into serious political leadership on the continent.
For women ready to move from ambition to actual influence, this is the kind of opportunity that can change the trajectory of a career.
